Coastal yard with some shade: pick tall fescue. Full sun, heavy use in the growing season or salinity concerns: pick Bermuda. Along the coast and in the north of the state, cool-season grasses like tall fescue compete best. Inland, in the valleys and the desert, warm-season grasses like Bermuda hold off weeds best. USA Sod commonly offers Bermuda TifTuf, Bermuda Tifway 419 and ElitePlus Fescue in San Diego: check your ZIP code for today's list.

Match the grass to your yard

Pick the grass that suits your site. One planted where it is poorly suited needs more care, and pests move in more easily. Before you order, look at:

  • how hot and how cold your area gets
  • how much sun or shade the lawn gets
  • how much foot traffic and wear it takes
  • how much water you have

Tall fescue for coastal yards

A cool-season grass, tall fescue does well in sun or partial shade. It handles warm summers and keeps its green through a cool winter, as long as the winter is not severe. It takes moderate foot traffic and is a solid pick for an everyday lawn.

It grows in clumps instead of creeping sideways, so bare spots can open up and may need reseeding. See our tall fescue sod guide.

Bermuda for full sun

Bermuda is a warm-season grass suited to the warm parts of California, and it grows best in full sun and heat. Where it fits, it uses water efficiently and has few pest problems. It also handles salty conditions well. Seeded and hybrid types both stand up to heavy use from spring through early autumn, while they are actively growing.

The trade-offs are shade and cold. Bermuda does poorly in shade, and long cold spells turn it brown. In most places it goes dormant and loses its color in late autumn and winter.

Hybrid Bermuda takes more work than the common type: it needs more nitrogen and lower, more frequent mowing. Edge it often to keep it in bounds. See types of Bermuda grass and TifTuf vs. Tifway 419.

Water use

Irvine water use figures show the summer gap. In July, cool-season grass used 5.9 acre-inches and warm-season grass used 4.3. In January, both used 1.2.

Three water habits:

  • Raise your mower one notch. Taller grass loses less water to evaporation.
  • Leave clippings on the lawn. They cool the soil and help it keep moisture.
  • Skip midday watering. In San Diego, watering at midday and sprinklers that hit pavement count as water waste you can report.

Which grass to pick

  • Coastal yard with some shade, and you want green through a mild winter: pick tall fescue.
  • Full sun, heavy use in spring and summer, or salty conditions: pick Bermuda.
