What If Your Sod Arrives Dead? Guarantees and Replacements

What our sod guarantee covers, what to do the moment a delivery arrives, why guarantees stop at installation, and the handful of mistakes that account for most new lawns that fail.

What If Your Sod Arrives Dead? Guarantees and Replacements

USA Sod guarantees that your sod arrives healthy, fresh and true to variety. Inspect it on delivery and contact us immediately if anything is wrong with its condition. The guarantee does not cover problems that arise after delivery and installation, because establishment depends on site preparation, same-day installation and consistent watering. Most failed lawns trace back to sod left too long on the pallet or allowed to dry out.

Nobody wants to spend real money on a pallet of grass and then wonder what happens if it shows up looking rough. It is a fair thing to ask before you order, not after.

Here is exactly where we stand, including the part most suppliers are vague about.

What we guarantee

We guarantee that your sod will be healthy, fresh, and true to variety when it arrives at your home.

Three separate promises worth separating out:

Healthy. Green, alive, and in condition to root.

Fresh. Cut for your order, with a goal of 24 hours from harvest to delivery.

True to variety. If you ordered Bermuda, you receive Bermuda. If you ordered a specific cultivar, that is what comes off the truck.

What to do when the truck arrives

Inspect the sod on delivery. Not that evening, not the next morning. When it arrives.

If you see anything wrong with its condition, contact us immediately and we will make it right.

This is not a formality designed to catch you out. It is genuinely the moment when a problem can still be solved cleanly. Sod that arrived in poor condition is a supply problem we can fix. Sod that has sat stacked in the sun for a day and a half is a different conversation, and one nobody enjoys.

Take a photo. It takes ten seconds and removes any ambiguity.

Where the guarantee stops, and why

Our guarantee does not cover issues that arise after delivery and installation.

That is the honest boundary, and we would rather state it plainly than bury it.

Once sod is on your soil, whether it thrives depends on things outside our control: how well the site was prepared, how quickly it was laid, and how consistently it was watered. A supplier who promises your lawn will succeed regardless of what happens after the truck leaves is promising something they cannot deliver.

What we control is what arrives. That is what we stand behind.

The mistakes that actually kill new lawns

Almost every failed sod installation traces back to one of these:

It sat on the pallet too long. Sod is perishable. Heat builds inside a stacked pallet, a process called pallet heating, and it can damage or kill the grass surprisingly quickly. Same-day installation is not a suggestion.

It went down on unprepared ground. New sod needs direct contact with soil. Laid over old grass, it traps the previous lawn underneath and struggles to root.

It dried out during establishment. This is the big one. New sod needs consistent moisture for the first weeks while roots knit into the soil below. Drying out once during that window can set it back permanently.

It was mowed too early. Wait until it holds firm when you tug a corner, usually around 14 to 21 days.

None of these are exotic. They are all timing, and they are all avoidable.

How to give yourself the best chance

  • Have the site prepped before the delivery arrives, not after
  • Lay the sod the day it lands
  • Water it immediately, and thoroughly
  • Keep watering consistently for the first few weeks
  • Leave the mower alone until it has rooted

If you are traveling in the two weeks after delivery, arrange for someone to water it or move your delivery date. That single decision saves more lawns than anything else on this list.

If something is wrong

Call 1-866-886-2763 as soon as you see it. The sooner we know, the more options there are.

The bottom line

We stand behind the condition and variety of what arrives at your home. Inspect it on delivery, tell us straight away if something is off, and get it laid and watered the same day.

Do those things and a new sod lawn is one of the most reliable improvements you can make to a property.
