Emerald Zoysia is right for your yard if you want a dense, fine-textured lawn in full sun or light shade, and you will keep your mower blades sharp and watch for thatch. Emerald is a hybrid zoysia. From its Zoysia japonica parent it gets cold hardiness, color and quicker growth; from its Zoysia pacifica parent, a fine leaf and thick growth. USA Sod commonly offers Emerald Zoysia in several markets: check your ZIP code for today's list.

What Emerald Zoysia is

Emerald is a selected cross of Zoysia japonica and Zoysia pacifica. It was bred in Tifton, Georgia, and came out in 1955. Zoysia buyers once had just two cultivars to pick from, Meyer and Emerald, and Emerald had the finer leaf.

Emerald resembles the Manilagrass zoysias such as Zeon in color, texture and density, and it shares their disease issues. Where it pulls ahead is winter hardiness and the wider range of places it adapts to.

How a zoysia lawn looks and feels

Zoysia makes a very thick lawn that holds up to wear, in full sun or light shade. The leaves are stiff, and people often compare walking on it to stepping on a cushion. Zoysias handle shade, salt and foot traffic well, and a well-kept stand grows thick enough to resist weeds.

The upkeep Emerald asks for

Keep the blades sharp. Stiff leaves make mowing hard with a dull blade. A reel mower is the best fit for fine zoysias like Emerald, though a rotary mower will do. Cut it shorter than 1 inch and you will mow more often.

Watch for thatch. Emerald and Meyer can build up thatch, most of all when they are cut high and seldom, or heavily fertilized. You may have to remove thatch every two to three years. Go gently, because these grasses come back very slowly.

Expect slow growth. Emerald grows low and slow. Planted as plugs 12 inches apart, it often needs three years to fill in. Sod covers the whole area the day you lay it.

Plan for dry spells. In a drought, zoysia browns and goes dormant fast, then greens up again once rain or watering returns.

Laying Emerald Zoysia sod

Lay and water the sod the day it arrives. Set it on bare, moist soil, stagger the pieces like bricks and butt the edges tight. Water at least twice a day, 1/4 inch each time, until new roots anchor the sod, usually 2 to 3 weeks. Keep play and traffic off the new lawn until the roots take hold.
