Zoysia, Bermuda, and St. Augustine are all priced per pallet, and that price is set per market, not nationally and not by one fixed markup per grass type. What actually moves your total is which varieties are offered where you live, how big a pallet is in your market, and whether you add installation. Check your ZIP code to see the real price for each variety offered in your area.
It is tempting to assume one grass type always costs more than another, the way a name-brand product costs more than a generic. Sod does not work that way. Measure your yard with the sod calculator first, since the square footage you enter matters more to your total than the variety name.
Why "which grass is cheaper" is the wrong question
USA Sod never states a flat per-pallet grass price in a blog post, because that price moves by market: the same variety can be priced differently in two cities depending on local supply. So the honest answer to "is Zoysia more expensive than Bermuda" is: it depends on your ZIP code, not on the grass name. How much does sod cost covers the general pricing picture; this post is about why the number moves.
What actually changes the total
- Which varieties are offered in your market. Not every variety of Zoysia, Bermuda, or St. Augustine is stocked everywhere. A grass that is common (and competitively priced) in one market may be unavailable, or priced differently, in another. Types of Bermuda grass and types of Zoysia grass cover what the varieties within each type actually are.
- Pallet size. Coverage is set per market, not per grass type: a pallet runs 400 to 600 square feet depending on the farm that cuts your market's sod. A bigger pallet means fewer pallets, and fewer pallets changes your total even if the per-pallet price is the same. See how many square feet does a pallet of sod cover.
- Installation, if you add it. Installation is priced per pallet and set per market too, running from about $200 to just over $1,100 per pallet, with volume discounts on larger orders. The rate does not depend on whether the pallet is Zoysia, Bermuda, or St. Augustine; it depends on labor and market.
- Delivery does not change. It is a flat $200 regardless of grass type or pallet count, so it is never the reason one quote is higher than another.
How to actually compare
Zoysia vs. Bermuda and Bermuda vs. St. Augustine cover which grass suits your yard (sun, shade, traffic, water). Once you know which type fits, get an instant quote for your ZIP code to see the real, market-specific price for the varieties available to you, pallet size included.
