Which St. Augustine Grass Variety Is Best for Shade?

UF/IFAS rates Floratam's shade tolerance poor, but Palmetto and ProVista St. Augustine rate better. Here is how to pick the right one for your yard.

Not every St. Augustine grass handles shade the same way. University of Florida IFAS rates Floratam, the most common variety, with poor shade tolerance, and says it does not persist well with less than 6 hours of direct sun a day. Palmetto and ProVista rate better for shade tolerance in that same UF/IFAS testing and can hold up under partial shade, though UF/IFAS says even Palmetto needs full sun or partial shade, not dense, all-day shade.

If your yard has big trees, a covered patio, or a side that never gets strong sun, the variety you choose matters as much as how you water it.

Why Floratam struggles in shade

Floratam is the coarse-bladed St. Augustine most homeowners picture, and the most widely used variety in Florida. University of Florida IFAS rates it with poor cold and shade tolerance relative to other St. Augustine cultivars, and says it does not persist well in spots that get less than 6 hours of sunlight a day.

Varieties that handle more shade

  • Palmetto St. Augustine: a medium-textured, dense variety. UF/IFAS rates its shade tolerance "very good" and says it "does well in full sun or partial shade, but not in dense shade."
  • ProVista St. Augustine: compared with Floratam, UF/IFAS rates ProVista with a darker green color and better shade tolerance, with a similar leaf blade width.

Even these varieties still need meaningful daily sunlight. "Shade tolerant" means better than Floratam, not grass that thrives with no sun at all.
