Sod Calculator

Use our free sod calculator to instantly find out how much sod you need for your lawn or landscaping project. Just enter your yard's dimensions, choose your shape, and get your square footage and pallet count in seconds.

How to Calculate Sod

Measuring for sod is straightforward:

  • Rectangle or square: Multiply length × width
  • Circle: Use the diameter (length × width of the circle's bounding box × 0.785)
  • Triangle: Multiply base × height, then divide by 2

Our calculator handles all three shapes automatically and adds a 10% margin of safety to account for cuts, edges, and mistakes — so you don't end up short.

How Many Pallets of Sod Do I Need?

A standard pallet of sod covers approximately 450 square feet, though this can vary between 400 and 540 sq ft depending on the supplier. The calculator rounds up to the nearest full pallet, so you always order enough.

Tips Before You Order Sod

  • Measure each section of your yard separately, then add them together for irregular-shaped lawns
  • Don't forget areas around trees, garden beds, and walkways; subtract those from your total
  • Order a full pallet, even if you're a few square feet under; leftover sod can patch bare spots later
  • Sod should be installed within 24 hours of delivery
